What is the difference between BLS and CPR?

Do you often wonder if a BLS Certification is the same as a CPR Certification?   Well, we’re here to set the record straight.  There is a difference.

A BLS certification is geared more toward professional rescuers, nurses, paramedics and lifeguards for example.  It falls outside the scope of something one would learn in a CPR course, including administering oxygen, team approach and hospital procedures.  A CPR certification has a more general curriculum and caters to the lay person, non-professional rescuer and those in the non-medical field.

BLS certification includes:

  • Efficient use of an AED, Automatic External Defibrillator
  • CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • How to proceed with Rescue breathing effectively
  • Adequate usage of bag-mask for ventilation
  • Training related to relief airway obstruction or choking

CPR certification includes:

  • First-Aid basics
  • How to deal with Injury and environmental emergencies
  • Basic use of AED

The American Heart Association requires renewing your certification every two years.   At East Coast Medical Training, our AHA approved training center offers BLS and/or CPR Renewal / Re-certification classes throughout the week.  Check our class schedule by clicking here.
